Tips for Making Your Soy Candles Last Longer, Scent the Room with More Fragrance

A candle company offers a few tips for burning new candles so that they last as long as possible and the scents continue to fill the room with the wonderful fragrance they were made with.
A “memory burn” is something all candles should have the first time they are lit and allowed to burn. A memory burn is allowing your candle to burn one hour for each diameter of the candle’s size. For example, if you have a 4 inch diameter candle, the first time you light a candle it should be allowed to burn for four hours uninterrupted in order to establish its “memory”. This allows your jar candle to create a full melt pool increasing the scent throw. Unfortunately, if the candle is not given a proper memory burn – if you burn your candle less time on the first time, it will “core burn” meaning it will burn down the center and the good scent throw will not be achieved. In addition, there will be the wax buildup at the bottom and the sides of the candle and not use all of the wax like a good burn does.
Other helpful hints for your candles include allowing a candle to cool and harden completely before relighting; when trimming the wick, only trim the “carbon ball” off the end; soy wax is a thick substance and requires extra heat for complete burn; discontinue burning container candles when there is ¼ inch of wax left in the bottom and soy wax can be cleaned up easily with soap and water.
Always use a wick dipper to avoid smoke and the disruption of your “now fragrant” home and when extinguishing a candle, don’t blow it out, rather use the end of a wick dipper and push the flame into the pool of wax and then pull it back out. This will extinguish your candle without smoke, keep your home smelling great and prime the wick for the next time you light the candle.
Soy candles should not be placed in direct sunlight or in the refrigerator because extreme temperature changes will cause discolorations within the candles.
Upon cooling, your soy candle may appear “bumpy” on the top, this is completely normal and a natural characteristic of all soy candles.
