Is it bad to blog about making money blogging?
Sep 1st, 2007 by Eric Odom

Julie Anne Bonner wrote a thought provoking post about those who blog about making money from blogging. Her premise is interesting, but one that I disagree with.
Okay, so I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that if 95% (and I think that is a bit low) of bloggers would stop blogging about making money blogging, then they might actually start making money blogging. I know, it’s a crrrraaaazy idea, but it’s true.
The problem I see here is that the opening paragraph assumes that bloggers who blog about blogging for money do not make money. In my opinion, this simply isn’t the case.
If blogging about making money blogging doesn’t result in making money, why are so many bloggers doing it? I mean… I blog about making money, and those posts almost always make me money. Am I alone?
Further down Julie’s post you’ll find some solid suggestions, but asserting that you not blog about blogging for money because it will not result in profit is a tad far fetched. I understand what Julie is trying to say, especially when it comes to the be original part of the post, but the bottom line is that blogging about blogging for money can be profitable.
Here is some food for thought…
I read an average of 30 to 40 posts about blogging and blogging for money every day. I also tend to click on ads when something grabs my attention. It would be safe to assume that many others do the same, making the topic profitable. Am I wrong?
And I understand that some bloggers get annoyed with these posts, but that’s the beauty of choice. You can simply skip to the next post. Not every post topic is going to strike interest in all readers.
With all that said, I’ve decided to go on the hunt for a couple of bloggers to interview sometime in the coming week. I’ll compile the information found and come back here for an update.
If you would like to discuss this with me, please contact me at eric -at- blogaught (dot) com
By the way, Julie, I love the blog! Just don’t see the full logic in that particular post. Perhaps we could discuss it?

Hey Eric! I love your header! I appreciate your post and I also appreciate how you disagreed with me but in a mature and thought provoking way. There are some rude people in this blogosphere and I find your writing refreshing. You have a new reader.
I would love to discuss this further and see what your take is on it. I would also like to see what you find out by interviewing other bloggers.
When I have more time I’d like to ask you some questions. It’s Saturday night and I’m headed out. Thanks for stopping by and I’ll catch up with you sometime next week.

The reason IMHO why so many people blog about making money is because they **believe** they can make money. I do half agree with Julie, at times they can be a bit dry and worthless.
Blogs like john chow and problogger do make money blog, but don’t blog about making money in the same respect as people who say “I made x amount from adsense this month!”.
It just depends though. Blogs that are crap will fail, blogs that are brilliant will go on and on. It can be whatever niche you want it to be.
Actually its not bad to start blogging about making money online, but I think that niche topic already had it “core” blogger like problogger and johnchow - where they already “proved” they already make money online. I think large portion of make money reader are from (well at least his loyal readers) Darren Rowse of ProBlogger.net or johnchow. For me it has to much competition maybe new blog can’t afford it.
There is no wrong to start another blog about making money online.
@ Rhys - Good points, but like Julie, you assume that bloggers aren’t making money. How do you know they aren’t. If I am, then others must be also, no?
@ dott - True about Darren and John, but the same could be said about any niche. There is always going to be the blogfathers of each category, but that doesn’t mean others can’t profit from it.
Thanks for stopping by!
@ Julie, I’ll drop you an e-mail.
