Thanks so much for this post! I have been debating the merits of installing Wordpress MU, and this answered many of the questions I had.

Mary, I use asmallorange.com and they are SUPERB! They will make the wildcard domain changes for you and allow WPMU to be hosted on shared hosting plans.

I would aim for the $10.00 per month package at a minimum.

Hi, I was wondering if you could let me know which hosting you recommend for Wordpress MU. I'm hoping to avoid the cost of a dedicated server account.

Thanks for the reply. I guess it does seem like WPMU should really be used only in cases where one wants to make it easier for many people to run many blogs. Especially with the availability of the fairly new automatic WP upgrade plug-in, I guess I'll be sticking to separate WP installs for my individual blogs. Thanks again.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for stopping by.

Here is a thought...

While you cannot customize a theme within the admin cp, nor the theme files itself without it changing the theme on all blogs using it, you can install seperate Wordpress blogs on the site for blogs that need a little more freedom.

For example, at BlogAught.com you have the blogs that are free and available for everyone. Those blogs have limited access based on the WPMU structure.

But I've installed a couple seperate Wordpress installs where I need more control from within the cp.

To see this in action, look at www.blogaught.com/blog

That blog is not a part of WPMU, rather, it is installed separately and on its own. I've done the same for a few other blogs, which gives me a lot more control over the files.

WPMU is used for quick and easy blogs, plus the ability to let anyone and everyone set one up.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the summary and review. I'm currently planning on started several of my own blogs, each of which would have it's own theme, etc. I want to be able to customize them. However, I also don't like the idea of managing several WP installations if I don't have to.

While WPMU certainly seems geared to creating blogging communities and isn't really meant to be used by a single person running multiple blogs, I'm wondering if this may be a good solution, especially since many other multiple-install solutions seem likely to fall to the wayside now that WPMU is out.

If the main con for WPMU aside from installation is theme customization, then that issue seems to go away in the case of a single person running multiple blogs. E.g., whatever customizing of themes I want to do, if I'm planning to use a unique theme for each blog, then I can customize to my heart's content, knowing that no theme will need to be made available to anything but its one intended blog.

Wondering, given your experience so far with WPMU, what your thoughts are about my thinking here. Is it foolish to go down this road to just manage a handful of my own blogs? Or does it seem right that managing one's own handful basically dispels the main con and makes WPMU a great option for such a situation?

Hi Han, thanks for stopping in.

Once you wrap your mind around WPMU, it's hard to stay away from it. It's a lot of fun to work with and it's loaded with challenges.

Check with your host. If they don't allow wildcard domains I can suggest a few good companies for you.

I'm so tempted to install it on femgeek.co.uk, I'm still struggling to come up with a use for that site!

I'm just wondering if my host allows wildcards now!
